In the Address Book, open Tools->Options and use the list there to delete
references to outdated contacts folders.

After furious head scratching, Janie asked:
| Thank you. I understood your instructions. I was trying to
| consolidate the folders from this place: Open my Outlook then go to
| Inbox then tools then Adress Book and open that there is a drop down
| box that has various names (contacts, collected contacts, etc.) can I
| delete those names? --
| Janie
| I am using Outlook 03.

|| You can easily combine the two contact folders into one but you do
|| not use the Heading Contacts to do so.
||
|| Open each contact folder and decide which one you want for your
|| default. Then close it. Open the folder you want to combine with
|| your default folder. Highlight a single contact, then press Control
|| +A to select all of the contacts. Then right click and drag the
|| contact to the default Contacts folder. When you release the mouse,
|| you will have a choice of Move or Copy. If you are unsure of how
|| this works, then choose Copy so that the data remains in your
|| non-default Contacts folder.
||
|| Once you have verified that this worked, you can right click on the
|| non-default Contacts folder and select Delete.

||| What I brought to the discussion is a question. I'm sure that I
||| don't use the correct words but I am frustrated with Outlood and it
||| seems like it should be an easy problem but I don't know what to do
||| about IT (whatever it is).
||| Let me see if I can explain. In the Outlook Folder section there is
||| the word CONTACt below that are two sub-folders. Is it possible to
||| move those two sub-folders into the contact folder? If it is
||| possible, how is that done?
|||
|||| No, none of the people who post here do this as a profession. We
|||| are all volunteers who value our time and wish that people who post
|||| here realize that we are not looking over your shoulder when you
|||| post a problem. We are neither mindreaders or owners of a crystal
|||| ball. Using unclear terms does nothing to help us help you.
||||
|||| Each of us (MVPs) have a limited amount of time to post here as we
|||| have real lives away from computers (most of us). Asking people to
|||| post clear descriptions of issues using Outlook terms is not asking
|||| too much.
||||
|||| Eventually, we just skip posts that make no sense. Then no one
|||| wins.
||||
|||| By the way, what have you brought to this discussion?

||||| Russ Valentine,
||||| Since you do this as a profession I'm sure you get tired of
||||| hearing from those of us who are not intellectual giants when it
||||| comes to Outlook. That does not mean that you need to be rude.
||||| How about suggesting an Outlook book or reference manual that I
||||| might understand because I have only a smattering idea of what
||||| you are talking about.
|||||
|||||| Stop. "Contact Lists" in the Outlook Address Book view are
|||||| virtual lists only. They do not exist and they contain no data.
|||||| They are simply views of the electronic addresses in your
|||||| Contacts Folders. If you have multiple lists in your address
|||||| book view, it simply reflects the fact that the Outlook address
|||||| book view is a dysfunctional utility that has never worked
|||||| correctly and that Microsoft can't fix. Outdated references to
|||||| Contact folders are retained even when those folders no longer
|||||| exist. It does not mean you have anything to consolidate.
|||||| Do some more research. Examine your folder hierarchy in Outlook
|||||| using Folder List view (ignore the address book view and never
|||||| try to manipulate data in that view). Do you really have more
|||||| than one Contacts Folder? If not, then you have nothing to
|||||| consolidate. You simply need to remove the outdated references
|||||| from your address book view. Simple to do. Can't tell you how,
|||||| since you decided not to post your Outlook version. --

|||||| ||||||| In my Outlook Address book I have 4 different contact lists. I
||||||| would like to
||||||| merge (or move) them into one book. I have read most questions
||||||| and answers in
||||||| this category but can't seem to follow the directions. When it
||||||| says to copy
||||||| and paste it doesn't make sense to me. If I copy a name and
||||||| then open one of
