copy and paste within word and excel

I having trouble with word and excel, whether copying or
cutting a paragraph or data in a cell, when I go to paste
it I get a print screen instead of text/data selected.

I'm using XP as the os, and I've patched everthing. I'm
using a laptop with external keyboard and mouse. I've
replaced the splitter, and used a different keyboards and
mice. I still have the problem

Ideas on what could cause this, or where to check?

We're having the same problem with Windows 2000 and Office 2000 (Word). The people having the problem are using IBM T40 laptops with the USB dual connector for their external mouse and keyboard. So far, the only thing we've come up with is the USB connector or possibly the mouse drivers. What type of laptop are you using?
