copy and pasting of tracked changes

Sometimes it's helpful for me to copy and paste sections of a document
I'm editing to a new document, but I have noticed that not all the
highlighted changes I make survive the pasting. Typically any comments
I've added are pasted correctly, but deletions and additions appear to
be lost. I have made sure that 'highlight changes' is on in the new
document before I paste to it.

Oddly, when I copy from the first page of the doc, all the edits are
there, but when I copy from somewhere within the document, the
deletions and additions are lost.

Is there a correct way to copy and paste to preserve the edits? and
(wishful thinking maybe) is there possibly a way for me to recover the
edits that appear to have been lost in previous pastings?

I'm using Mac Word 2004.

Thank you very much for any assistance.

Hi Sean:

"Off in both" is the magic incantation.

If you "Copy" tracked changes with tracked changes active, the "Deleted
Text" is treated as "gone" when you paste, and the added text is treated as
"Existing".

Turn Track Changes OFF in both source and destination, and both the
additions and the deletions will copy across as tracked changes.

Cheers
