Copy. Attempt to paste. Crash.

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Into week 2 of my mac and Excel 2008, and it's been quiet and calm and staple.

Today I tried to edit a file that I worked with successfully last night.

Basically, I want to insert a row, copy and paste.
I did the same thing last night without any trouble.

As soon as I try to paste, I get the spinning beachball and have to force-quit.

Things I've tried:
- saving the file without the macros and using the new file
- saving the file again on the old pc, to xlsx, and loading the xlsx version to Excel 2008
- working with other files

What I haven't tried (yet):
- opening the file on my daughter's macbook

What's up?
What can I do to try to isolate what's wrong?
Is there an Excel utility that will tell me the health of a file?

Thank you -

I have also tried:
- copying individual pages to a new workbook; I was optimistic that this solved the crashing but it didnt'

In fact, as I'm typing on this message, Excel just crashed and closed all by itself elsewhere on my desktop.

I think it has to do with linked files that are not healthy.

.....
I've spent hours re-building the file, copying a page at a time, cleaning the links, etc etc etc.

It's still weird. The access time for touching the workbook is tediously slow. I tried to type the text in, rather than copying. Crazy slow. And then it will revive and do a bunch of movements at once.

Somehow, it thinks the links are intense, or there's a circular link, or it thinks it's lined to a file on the network...

not pretty. Any ideas?

Hi,

Can you confirm that you're using Office 12.1.1? If not, I would recommend
upgrading to that version and seeing if the problem still happens.

If you are using 12.1.0 or 12.1.1., would it be possible to send me the
file? I'd love to try to help figure out what's going on here.

Thanks,

Pat McMillan

Hi Pat -
I am using 12.1.1

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to send you the file - it is filled with 11 years of confidential info... and, as you know, I can't obliterate the info since I can't copy and paste!

I rebuilt it by copying from old file to new file, page at a time, to isolate the area.

I think the problem had to do with links.

For the moment, altho I searched for any reference to a bad link and didn't find any, I was hesitant to actually delete the link (and have references change to hard numbers). So, my 'creative' workaround was to change the link to a dummy.xls file - I figure, that way, if any cells are looking for info, they'll show up as errors rather than wrong numbers.

I'll be back in touch when/if I have more trouble (you can be sure of that!)

Thank you Pat -
Marion

Thank you Marion. I understand the confidentiality issue with your file. If
you do crash again, please do copy/paste the crash log (from Microsoft Error
Reporting) into an email message and post it to this list or send it to me
directly. We might be able to figure out what's going on by looking at that.

Thanks,

Pat

Hi Pat
I've experienced this problem too.
Excel crashes every time I try to delete cells, or copy cells in a particular workbook. I've experienced this before and appeared to get around it by manually recreating the data in a new workbook. Any chance you could look into it too, I'll send you whatever info you need.
Thanks

Thank you. If you could send me the file and detailed steps that lead to the
crash (which specific cells you're deleting, etc.) and a full crash log
(copy/paste the entire log from Microsoft Error Reporting) it would be
hugely helpful (please send directly to me). We still haven't gotten to the
bottom of this yet.

Thanks,

Pat McMillan
