Copy Contacts to Another Folder?

J

Jim

I want to copy the contacts in one contact folder to another folder. I have
been able to do so, by using the "Edit - Copy to folder" feature, with
several folders, but when I try to do it with one of my folders, I get a
message "Creating a new item from the selected list could take time. Are
you sure you want to create a new item from these xx items?" and if I say
"Yes" it creates a new Contact form with all the previous items in the
Notes: section.

There must be some setting on this specific folder that is preventing me
from doing what I have been able to do on many other folders.

Help Please ??? Jim Johannsen, Santa Barbara, CA

Sounds like the target folder may not be a contacts folder. What happens when you create a new item directly in that folder?

Thanks Sue for picking up on this message - The target folder is a contacts
folder and it does accept contact records copied from other folders. I can
create new items in my custom format in both the from and the target folder.

Very strange. I can't imagine a scenario that would create a contacts folder that doesn't seem to act as a contacts folder. If it were my project, I might copy the contents elsewhere, delete the folder, and start over.

Thanks Sue, I have tried that also and still no go. I just found that I
have four different Job Titles in the contacts in this folder. I can copy
three of them into other folders but the fourth causes the problem.

Maybe I should reload the Outlook program?

It probably would do no harm to run Help | Detect and Repair.

I don't understand what you're saying about Job Titles, though.

I ran Help/Detect and Repair and still no go. Regarding Job Titles - in
that Contact field I have the text for four variations of the job titles
that my contacts have, the contacts for three of the variations will copy to
other folders, but the fourth will not.

Sounds crazy, doesn't it.

Is the problem folder in an Exchange Server mailbox or a Personal Folders .pst file?

Sue - Thanks for your patience. I can't find anyway to locate the ID for
the specific folder that won't copy but it must be a .pst because when I
travel, I copy the entire .pst file to my laptop and it comes along OK.

In case you wonder, I also tried to copy it on my laptop version and still
the contacts from only 3 of the 4 variations in the text of the Job Title
field will copy.
