Copy Database to new computer

Mike Cook

I hope somebody can help. I just bought a new computer
and I have Access 2000 on it. I have access 97 on my
older computer and I want to transfer the table & queries
to the new system. Is there anything I can do or must I
rebuild the database & queries and then re-enter the 7,000
line items?

Thanks in advance, Mike

Mike,

Just copy your database to your new computer and use
Access 2000 to open it. Upon opening the database, you
will be prompted whether or not you want to convert the
database to Access 2000. When you answer "yes," it will
ask you to rename the database. In this case I like to
use the same same name as before but I add "2000" to the
end of the name.

Just copy the database to the new computer and open it with Access 2000.
You'll be asked whether you want to convert the database to Access 2000
or leave it in Access 97 format. If you leave it in Access 97 format,
you won't be able to change the design of any object, but you will be
able to work with the data. Unless you want to be able to copy the
database back and forth between your old computer and your new computer,
I'd go ahead and convert it to Access 2000 format. That will create a
new database with a new name. After you've checked and are satisfied
with the conversion, you can delete the A97 version and rename the A2K
version to the old name, if you want.

That is my problem. How do I copy the database to the new
system?

Thanks, Mike

You mean, how do you physically copy it? That could be done in a
variety of ways, depending on what hardware you have available and how
big the database is. If your computers are both attached to the same
network, you can just copy the file over the network. If not, you may
need to use a floppy or compact disk as a transfer medium.

First compact the database (Tools -> Database Utilities -Compact
Database) to make it as small as Access can make it. It's possible that
a compression utility like WinZip or pkZip could create a further
compressed version of it that would even fit on a floppy disk and could
be transferred from one PC to the other that way.

If that won't work -- and it's a long shot for most databases -- you may
have the ability to write it to a CD on your old PC, and read that CD on
the new PC. One thing to watch out for here is that, after you copy the
file from the CD, you must reset its Read Only property.

If you can't do it via CD, but both PCs have an internet connection, you
may be able to e-mail it from one PC to the other.
