copy distribution lists for editing

Many of my users have a large number of distribution
lists. Their goal is to copy a distribution list so it
can be renamed and edited with other user names. The
problem I came up against is Outlook links the copied
distribution list to the original distribution list. If
they edit the copy, the master reflects the changes. I
have tried to export then import but the instructions in
Outlook are confusing and lack the necessary info. Does
anyone have a solution to this?
