Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I open one sheet, copy a columns of cells, paste the cells in a new sheet (all with 2008) and on the paste the dates are all wrong. I tried copying all, copying values, copying formulas, formats.

As an example, in the original the date will look like 12/15/08 and the paste looks like 12/14/04 - all "08" became "04" and the day moves by "1".

Any hints?

You're leaving out one very pertinent detail - the "sheet" you're copying is
in a different *workbook* file than the sheet you're pasting to - right?

No hints, just facts :) Excel supports 2 Date Systems: 1900 & 1904. The
setting is workbook [file] specific, but the default on the PC is the 1900
system whereas the default on the Mac is 1904. If you want more detailed
information have a look here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/180162

Regardless of which version of the program you're opening the files with the
setting within the file is observed. If the book you're copying from
originated on a PC [the dates are correct even if you open it on a Mac] but
the book you're pasting to originated on your Mac, the date values are being
parsed as 4 yrs. & 1 day different than what you "think" you copied.

If you're pasting to a new workbook one option is: Before pasting go to
Excel> Preferences - Calculation in the target workbook & change the
checkbox status for "Use the1904 Date System". When you paste the dates will
be correctly displayed.

Other options are provided in the KB article linked to above.

Thanks for pointing me to the KB article. I will look into it right away. I am actually pasting from a downloaded American Express statement that downloads as a CVS file (and I open with MAC Excel) to a different worksheet file that was created originally in a PC but since has been edited for months in the MAC (that you point out reads the dates correctly).

Thanks again
