First, you shouldn't be copying your old normal.dot into Office XP. Copy it
under the name normal2000.dot or something like that. Then use the organizer
to move your customizations from that normal2000.dot to your new normal.dot
or to a different global template. See <URL:
http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm> for step-by-step instructions
on moving / sharing / copying customizations including AutoText,
AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments, macros, etc. For AutoCorrect entries
you'll need to be able to run Word 2000 to run the utility for backing them
up.
--
For now, get rid of or rename the copies you've made. Normal.dot will be
stored in the location you've specified for user templates. It will not
exist when you first install Word; Word will create it on the fly if it
doesn't find normal.dot in that folder. If you are prompted as to whether
you want to save changes to normal.dot (you should be prompted) you have to
answer yes at least once to create a permanent normal.dot.
--
Word 2002 (XP) will save normal.dot as a hidden system file. If you want to
see it, you'll need to have your Windows system set up so that you can see
hidden and system files. In Windows, in an Explorer window, View => Folder
Options. Click on the second tab and select the option to view all files.
Also uncheck the option about hiding extensions for known file types.
