Copy & Paste inserts a screen shot not the copied text

When I use "control + C" and "control + V" to copy and paste, instead of
having the copied text inserted into the document, a "screenshot" of the
entire screen is inserted where I wanted to insert text. Anybody ever see
this happen. By the way, this happens when I use an external keyboard or
the laptop's keyboard and in Office applications and other applications.
TIA for any help.
