Copy / Paste issue between publications... ???

L

Lost in NH

I am a very active computer user with a fair amount of knowledge.

I replaced a PC w/ a new Dell and have publisher 2000 installed on it. I
used to be able to copy and paste between publications, now I copy and when I
attempt to paste to the new publication nothing happens - any ideas?

I have detect and repaired, uninstalled and reinstalled - nothing works. I
copy between applications almost hourly let alone daily and I use this cut
and paste between publications frequently. The work around is time consuming
at best - anyone else run into this and have suggestions how to fix???

Is this failure happening with just Publisher? Are your other applications
working okay? Does the clipboard work if you select one object? Have you tried
a detect and repair? Have you installed the service packs?
You can drag and drop between publications.

Windows XP Professional 2002 w/ SP2. All Microsoft Update (windows updates)
and Microsoft Office Updates have been done, even doing custom nothing else
shows available or due.

I can copy in publisher and paste in Word or as an image in other graphics
programs. I can copy in one instance of publisher and it holds in the
clipboard, then
in the next instance of publisher I can right click or Edit / Paste or Paste
Special and it looks like it is going to paste but nothing shows up. Then the
option to paste again becomes unavailable.

I am using Microsoft Office 2000 and Publisher 2000. Publisher was bought
seperate from Office.

I have never seen this before nor from what I have read has anyone else.

It is also worth mentioning I can copy and paste to my hearts content in a
single instance of publisher or single publication but multiple publications
it fails.

This PC came with Office 2003 demo pre-loaded and it was uninstalled using
control panel.

I am now also having this on one of my systems. I can narrow it down a
bit for you.

Last Tuesday (10/10) all was running fine. I then installed on
Wednesday evening:
- Windows XP maintenance for October
- Office 2000 maintenance (at least 1, definately 2, or maybe 3 months)
8 pieces of maint went on 1 or more definately hit Publisher (I don't
have the list in front of me)

Today, the user attempted to copy/paste from one Publisher 2000 file to
the other and it failed. It has worked for years.

System is XP SP2 plus all maintenance, Office 2000 plus all
maintenance.

Any ideas?
Any ideas of what to try?
TIA

More info:
I tried in now on multiple PCs.....
When I copy from one pub file....
Go to the target doc...
If I right-mouse click 'Paste' is available, the FIRST time,,,
If I use the menu bar under Edit, Paste is never available.
I have narrowed it down to the application of maintenance to Office or
XP, but most likely Office,
I have narrowed it down to one of just a few pieces of maintenance,,,

The clipboard is a Windows controlled function. If you open the clipboard
manually can you see the copied data?
The clipbrd.exe is in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Drag the icon to the
desktop and create a shortcut.
You need to ask about clipboard issues in a Windows newsgroup.

When you copy to clipboard the item (text or image) is copied. It can be
pasted to your hearts delight in the same publication, but it attempts to
paste to other publications 1x then the option to paste is gone. The item
still remains in the clipboard however. You can drag and drop out of
publisher to word but not between publisher publications???

I simply don't know what to tell you. I can copy/paste from a Publisher file to
a Publisher file over and over with no problem. You might try a disk clean-up.
Don't delete Office setup files.

Can you drag and drop between your Publisher files?
Do a repair from the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to Office
2000, click change, repair.

Unfortunately, I have tried that w/ no success. I completely uninstalled
office and publisher, deleted the office folder, etc. Reinstalled - no luck.
Did the detect and repair - no luck.

Seems to me from reading other peoples messages, especially where this
problem is also present in word that a recent security update wasn't tested
enough and might have caused this problem.

After the 'copy' in Publisher 2000, I can Paste to:
- Any Office 2000 application, EXCEPT another Publisher 2000 document.
- Notepad
- Any other application, your can expect to paste to...

( I am not at the site having the failure now to do what you requested)
but see below.. I think it shows the data is in the clipboard...

My 'workaround' right now is
Copy from Pub2000 Doc1
Paste to Word2000 Doc1
Copy from Word2000 Doc1
Paste to Pub2000 Doc2
which is a real pain.....

As I stated earlier, all this worked fine, until I put the Windows
October maint on, and brought Office up to date.(October maintenance,at
least and I believe Sepetember)
Looking back at the thread. another user user had the problem on 09/29,
so I think that eliminates Windows maintenance, as I did the September
Windows maintennce in September and this process of moving from one Pub
document to the other was used 4 times in the interim.

Curious... when you re-installed..
How 'current' did you get?
Did you run 'Office Update'?

If so. and you are in a postion to do so, and have the time and
patience!, could you:
Uninstall
reboot
Reinstall just from CD
(now check to see if the problem occurrs)
Put on Office maintence, but OMIT the most recent maintenace, that was
release after Aug....
(now check to see if the problem occurrs)
If it still does not occur, we have really zeroed in on the
maintenance.....

This could help us pinpoint the problem.....

Yet another variation we have found....
I can do this....
Copy from PUB1 TEXT....
Paste to WORD1 TEXT
Copy from WORD1 TEXT
Paste to PUB2 TEXT ..... No problem.....
BUT
Copy from PUB1 IMAGE
Paste to WORD1.IMAGE.... works so far
Copy from WORD1 IMAGE
Paste to PUB2 IMAGE... no image will paste

But insert image from file works....
I am not at that PC to use clipboard and check there..

just adding pieces to this puzzle...

I posted the same fault but under "Office General", oops :).

Anyway, I installed the same way I did before the crash, so I can only
imagine that it was either a Os or office maintenance release that has caused
this as I have all recent updates for both.

» I have the same problem with Publisher 2003 and Word 2003 with all update,
on windows 2000 sp4 with all update. They pop-up me an error message and
close the application......

FINALLY, I think I have gotten to the bottom of this, at least for me
and hopefully for others....
It was not without a lot of PAIN and some $$$'s on my part.

1) First of all I openned a $0 incident with Microsoft because for me,
it was clearly related to the install of WIndows updates on not 1, but
6 different machines!

2) The product support specialist could find nothing wrong with my
setup or anything else.

3) The suggestion was made that since these updates could not be
uninstalled, to uninlstall Publisher and re-install WITHOUT
KB894540(fix for (MS06-054),

(4) As this point things got ugly for me. My 'disk 2' became
unreadable!! My disk 2 from another install was also unreadble. I was
forced to hunt down another legal copy of Office 2000. This set me back
time and $$$'s

5) Uninstalled Disk2 (and while I was at it Disk 1)

6) Reinstalled Disk 1 and Disk 2

7) Installed Sr1 from Update.

8) Installed all other maintenace EXCEPT KB894540

All is now well..

I will be reopenning my 'ticket' to try to force the issue that
KB894540 is BROKE. I would hope that many users do the same, in order
to get the module fixed.

Please reply back if this fixes the issue for you

I am happy you are up and working, it was regrettable you had so many problems.
Thanks for posting your success.
