copy&paste problem

R

redheadedpamela

good lord, after 7 years of using MS Pub 2000, today it will not copy and
paste between pub documents.
i can open a new pub blank, draw a text box, type some text, copy that text,
open another new pub blank, draw a text box, and it will not paste the
copied text into the new doc.
it won't copy objects, pictures, old stuff, new stuff, nada.
i was going to restore with my office 2000 cd, but it said it was service
pack 1, and i knew we've been on service pack 2 for quite a while.

any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks,
pam

Windows XP? The clipboard is a Windows function. You may need to do some disk
cleanup. Have you changed your firewall or security settings? Is the clipboard
set to automatic in Computer services? Have you installed a new program
recently?

Do a detect and repair.

R

redheadedpamela

more info: i can still alt-prnt screen and paste into pub.
yes, windows xp.
clipboard is working for ms word.

i don't get an error message or anything.
absolutely nothing happens inside the new pub doc, when i r-click and choose
paste; or when i choose edit, then paste.

i noticed that paste was not available anymore after that one try, which
made me think maybe clipboard was the one having the problem.

but i can still copy text from a word doc, and paste it into pub.

R

redheadedpamela

if it's text or a picture from word, it will paste into pub.

but it will not paste pub to pub.

I went to Start, Search, "computer services" and got nothing.

I also went to Start, Search, "clipboard" and got nothing.
So I went to Control Panel, Admin Services, and looked around in Component
Services, but didn't see anything that looked like clipboard, or like pub.

R

redheadedpamela

thanks so much for the suggestions.
i ran disk cleanup.
i ran norton live update.
i ran windows update.
i ran office 2000 update.
i ran detect and repair inside help in pub 2000.
none of the above helped.

you said "is clipboard set to automatic in computer services?" can you tell
me where computer services is? i looked in control panel, administrative
tools, component services and computer management. I ended up in console
root, component services, computers, my computer, found ms pub, and checked
the properties. under security tab, i made sure all were default settings.

i can't believe something like this has brought me nearly to tears. i have
used pub almost exclusively for the past 7 years, and i have hundreds of
files, lots of art work, many publications, etc. now i'm to the point i
can't even think.

do you have any other suggestions?
thank you,
pam

The clipboard in Windows XP is called the clip book. Double click services in
the Administrative Tools, scroll down to ClipBook. Right click, properties, set
to automatic.

You can put the Clipboard on your desktop. The exe is in the Systems32 folder.
Scroll down to Clipbrd.exe, drag and drop it on desktop.

Can you restore your computer to a time before you experienced this problem? It
could be a security update. When I copy/paste between 2000 publications it
becomes very slow. I use Vista. On my XP computer I have not installed the
updates and I am not having any problems.

thanks mary.
i think this may lead somewhere.
when i got to clipbook, it was disabled.
i reset it to automatic.
pub still will not paste from one pub to another.
yes, i am using xp professional.

1. the only thing that i can think of that i may have done that would
affect this was to get rid of "helpsvc.exe". (i had noticed how this
process was just grinding away--writing to the hard drive--for 3 and 4
minutes at a time, using all the brain, and i just had to sit there and
wait for it to finish.)
i can't remember now how i got rid of it. i didn't do anything to "root" or
"key" or any of the deep stuff, i remember that. so maybe i should find a
way to put that back, then i could use the ms hotfix for it.

2. now to the other possible fix.
i tried every restore date that i had, and it could not restore back to any
of them. on one try, there was a very quick flash of a boxed message that
said "The application failed to initialize because the window station is
shutting down." (window station??). there was also a quick flash of a .dll
error, but i did not catch which dll.

i also noticed within the sys restore window that on yesterday's date, there
was something called "Softwear Distribution Service 2.0" which sounds kind
of bogus too.

3. i have run norton's full scan.

4. if you have not installed updates on your xp computer, do you use
something else for security. cause norton wants to run it, and not let
windows run it. i think norton disables windows firewall anyway. so i
don't know why i download those updates anyway.

thanks for your help.

i just read that sp2 put the clipbook settings to disabled.
so i don't guess that was it, since sp2 has been on here quite a while.

Hello you nice helpful people,
I think you guys are saints for helping others with their problems.
I did all those fixes, and restored to a previous date, but no luck.
Still cannot paste from one MS Publisher publication to another MS Publisher
publication.

But I think I have figured it out maybe. See what you think of this.
A while back, I downloaded the trial edition of MS Pub 2007 from the
Microsoft website. (I noticed it said that after so many uses, the
functionality would be limited.)
Anyway, I tried it out for ONE new document. Then the next time that I
rebooted, ALL my prior pub icons had been changed from the Pub 2000 icon to
the Pub 07 icon.
That kind of scared me, so I removed the trial program from my machine, as
they said that I could. Then at the next reboot, all the icons were back to
Pub 2000.

Do you think there could still be instructions in there from that trial
program messing with my Pub 2000 program? Like do you think maybe Pub 07
was "saving" all my prior docs as Pub 07 docs?

Thanks,
Pam

No. Only documents you opened with the trial and then saved will be in
2002-2007 format.

Yes, I see what you're saying.
But why did all the icons change to the new one?

Because the file association changed from Publisher 2000 to Publisher
2007 Trial. The icon isn't stored with the file, it's assigned it by
Windows on the basis of the file extension. All Publisher files end in
..pub, and installing the trial associated Publisher 2007 Trial with .pub
files, and hence the associated icon with such files.

You can create a blank text file and rename it to have a .pub extension
- it will get a Publisher icon, but that doesn't make it a Publisher file.

I still cannot paste pub to pub.
I used disk #2 (where Publisher is) and re-installed MS Office 2000.
I still cannot copy and paste from one .pub to another .pub.
Any more suggestions?
Everyone has been so kind, and I'm sure I've cleaned up a lot of junk off my
computer as a result of this, but so far, no luck with MS Publisher 2000.
Thanks,
Pam

thank god and greyhound the glitch is gone.
finally my combo cd/dvd started working, instead of just spinning, and it
read both MS Office CDs and reinstalled them.

I guess those cds might be in pretty bad shape after 7 years.
I think this is my last Dell also. It's an Aug 04 purchase Inspiron 8600,
pretty top for the time, but is 2 and a half to 3 years all you get now?

What brand do you people in the know prefer?

Thanks to all for listening to me rant, and for all your suggestions.
I have a much cleaner computer now.
I'll be doing some serious backup data burning. Looks like I dodged a
bullet.

Can you run MS Office on a MAC?
thanks,
pam

Sorry if I've just jumped in mid-stream again
but if I have two instances of PUB open on my two monitors
with different pubs on each, I can drag an article/story into the other,
as long as the "normal" stuff is the same, it just transfers
over...

but then I don't know what I'm typing about :)

Take a backup copy to new media - that should fix any disk read errors
(although unrecoverable data will not magically be recovered, at least
you may be able to use them properly).
I think this is my last Dell also. It's an Aug 04 purchase Inspiron 8600,

Depends on what you pay. Inspirons are generally made from cheaper
(hence lower-quality) components - that's why they cost less than the
business machines (Latitudes?) for equivalent specifications.

I've found laptop components to not be as durable as desktop components,
too - possibly due to the additional wear-and-tear a laptop gets.
What brand do you people in the know prefer?

For desktops, I roll my own. For laptops, I use Novatech, which are a
small UK vendor who (for notebooks) rebadge generic machines from
various manufacturers. The warranty support is really quite good,
although I'd have preferred it if I hadn't needed to use it.

If I were in the market for a high-performance/high-spec machine, I'd go
with an Acer Ferrari. Everyone who's used one loves it, but I just can't
afford it.
Can you run MS Office on a MAC?

Two different answers:
- There is an Office:Mac, which contains Word, Excel, Entourage (like
Outlook) and PowerPoint. No Publisher, Access, etc.
- New Macs these days (for over a year now, I think) use Intel
x86-compatible processors rather than the PowerPC processors that were
used previously. That means you can run Windows on a Mac (using Apple's
shiny easy-to-use dual boot technology known as Boot Camp), and run
Office for Windows on that.

If you can, I'd wait until Mac OS 10.5 is released before buying a Mac
(expected October, I think).
