Copy/Paste text Word 2004 to iChat malfunction

Charles Fletcher

Hi All,

Just getting geared up with the new Word 2004, and have encountered a
strange problem.

I was exchanging instant messages with a co-worker through iChat 2.1 (v153),
and I wanted to paste a piece of text from a Word (2004) document into an
IM.

However, when I tried to paste the copied text into the iChat IM, I got a
jpeg of a black rectangle the size of the text instead of the actual text.

After several tries, the only way I could work around this was to paste the
text into an Entourage message, copy it again, then paste it into iChat.

I went into the Word prefs and turned off "Include formatted text in
Clipboard," but that didn't help.

I'm running Office 2004 on an iMac 1 GHz/768 MB, 15" flat panel, using Mac
OS X 10.3.3.

Any suggestions?

Charlie

Hi Charlie:

The latest Microsoft applications default to XML on the clipboard; the
latest Apple applications presumably default to PDF. The two do not
directly correspond. XML is a much richer protocol that contains a lot more
features.

To do what you need to do, you probably need to use Paste Special if iChat
supports it. If not, then you need to Copy in Word, then Paste into
TextEdit, then copy and paste again from there.

If this becomes a constant problem to you, you could make a Word macro that
round-trips the selection out to a file and brings it back in again as
ASCII, but it would be tricky to write and not totally reliable in service
(because the content of a Word document won't always express in ASCII and
some recipient applications won't decode Unicode).

Sorry to be not much help
