copy the highlighted area to the clipboard

Sorry for the simple question. How do I copy the highlighted area to the
clipboard? I tried "selection.copy" but the clipboard was empty (the
paste option in notepad was grayed out). Thanks.

Any other way of doing it, e.g. copying to a range first then copying
the range?
