Copy Windows Address Book to Outlook 2003

Al McCulloch

I have previously created a large "Windows XP" address
book containing fax numbers, names and addresses. I just
did the latest upgrade for "Office" and it appears I no
longer can use the XP address book to select recipients
to fax to. After a lot of investigation in the Microsoft
help sites, I am getting the impression I need to somehow
copy the "Windows Address Book" information over to
Outlook "Contacts" via an import/export process. I could
not find specific help in the Microsoft help area that
specifically refered to moving "Window Address Book" over
to Outlook. I did find: "Copy Outlook Express address
book contacts to Outlook" but that did not work.
Thanks, if anyone can help.

Outlook cannot import WAB files directly. Import it into Outlook Express
first, then you can import from OE into Outlook.

Russ,
Thank you for the assistance in this matter. I bet it is
tough to stay calm in answering some of our issues. Our
terms and understandings are so varied.

My back up plan will be to just type all the Fax &
address information into Outlook 2003 if all else fails.
I have spent many times the hours trying to automatically
transfer the information from Outlook Express/windows
address book to the Outlook 2003 Contacts.
I have found that the windows XP "WAB" is the same
looking as the Outlook Express "contacts". It must be the
same file. They both look to have the WAB look. If I add
a new "contact" in either, the information is
added to the same file it appears.

With that said I attempted to import the address book
from Windows Express to Outlook 2003. The import report
in Outlook 2003 indicated that zero files were
transfered. So just as you said before, the WAB files
will not transfer to Outlook 2003. I was a little
confused with this error since the addrees/contacts were
listed in Windows Express why it did not work....
So I thought I would try the other approch which
is Export the Outlook Express contacts to a Personal
Address Book in Outlook as explained in the article "Copy
Outlook Express address Book contacts to Outlook" found
in the Office Assistance web site. I re-created a
Personal Address Book in Outlook following the
proceedures in the same artical above. I followed
the process and ended up with the Error: "Windows Address
Book is currently unable to perform this export. Make
sure you have a PAB set up in Outlook and tat is is set
as your current personal Address Book..... I went back
through the process. It looks like the program wants to
put the PAB for Outlook in the following
file "C:\Documents and Settings\Al\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\mailbox.PAB"
The clintcher is, I started to drill down in
the "Explorer" and got down to the \Al\
file and that is as far as I could go. There were no
files \local settings\ and so on................So since
I have gone around in circles for a couple of days, I
thought I would continue by questions. I might also
mention, I did searches for "*.wab" files and "*.pst"
and came up empty for files with thoughs extensions...

Thank you again,
Al

What steps did you use to import from Outlook Express and what exactly
happened?
You must have the Contacts stored in the default Contacts Folder in the
active identity of OE on the same partition to be able to import them into
Outlook. Trying to export to a PAB as an intermediary is not a good idea.
Outlook has not used PAB's for years so it is not likely you even have a
PAB, nor would you need one.

Thank you!!!!!
Once I moved my addresses back to the "main Identity
Contacts" folder from the "Shared" folder (in Outlook
Express), the transfer of address information from OE to
Outlook 2003 worked just fine. Thank you again.
