Copying and Pasting Formatted Text in Word 97

I am taking an online class and several students are
having problems and we need help. Part of our weekly
assignments requires that we cut and paste certain
information into a Word document, modify that document,
and send it in for grading. The problem seems to be
related to Word 97 and/or Windows 98. Several students
set up like that can copy the formatted text, which is
multi-colored, but when it is pasted into Word 97, the
text pastes all black, and some italics change to regular
text. I've tried to help these students, but so far have
been unable to do so. Does anyone out there know how we
can help these very frustrated students? The tech people
at the school do not know how to help either. Thank you.

Hi Elizabeth,

The problem may stem from the fact that Word manages the appearance of text
according to 'styles' that have been defined in the target document. If a
style of the same name is used in the source document ('Normal' is typical),
any text in that style in the source document will change formatting to suit
the definition of the same style in the target document.

If, however, a user re-formats characters within a style, without changing
the style itself, this 'hard' formatting can carry over to the target
document. At other times, the changed text attributes will get reversed - I
think this happens when a whole paragraph, including the paragraph marker's
format is changed without modifying the style.

Cheers

Thank you for this, but we are copying from a report
generated by a server and displayed on a web page. This
is why I am not sure where to get the answers needed.
