copying before Word opens is not pasting

I have Office 2000. If Word is already open, copying and pasting is a
breeze. But if I select and copy something and THEN open up Word, the item I
copied is not pasted. In fact clicking edit doesn't show that paste is
available. However, I can open notepad or editpad and pasate the same info
before/after Word has ignored it.

Is this a feature or a bug? Is there a way around this, aside from having
Word open forst?

I did not know that but I use Word 2002 as part of Office XP and
things copied with CTRL-C certainly can be pasted both formatted
and unformatted.

Replying to my own post: there must be some sort of error since
Word97 certainly allows copying before opening a Word document.
I have the program installed on a partition and have tried it.

I have the same problem on all of my computers that have Microsoft Word 2003 installed.

Another reason to stay with Office 97... newer is not always better.

It figures because I sold my one and only copy of Microsoft Office 97 Standard Edition on Amazon.com months
ago.
