Copying Data Between Instances of Project Server

D

Derek Bolan

I have created archival instances of both Project Server and
Sharepoint. My plan is that once a project is completed, I will copy
the data to the archival instances and delete the projects on the
production instances.
To save the project data, I was considering saving the production
project to a file and then importing that project file into the
archival instance. This could work for the scheduling data, but does
nothing for the issues and documents on the Sharepoint server.
Any ideas on what to do for the Sharepoint data, and if my plan for
archiving the project is reasonable?

Hi Derek,

This is a decent approach. Just be aware that if you make modifications to
the settings under the "Admin" tab in PWA, the Enterprise Global or
calendars in the Resource Pool, you will probably want to make the same
adjustments on the archive server. This will avoid importing problems and
ensure data integrity.

If you have MSP 2003 Server, there is a neat little tool (warning: I have
not tried it yet) that lets you grab a single project and move it into
another server. It was designed for data recovery purposes, but I suppose
it could work in your scenario as well. You can download it from here:

Restore Single Project Tool (2003 Only):

As for SharePoint, keep in mind that STS for Project 2002 stores files
locally, so I would probably archive them all into a ZIP and manually upload
them to another STS site.

For Issues and Documents, I'm not sure there is a good approach. First
thing that comes to mind *might* be to use replication, but I really don't
know the internal workings of STS well enough. I would suggest you consult
the experts at the SharePoint newsgroups.

Another thing you will not get in this process are any status reports.
