Copying links from Master project to create a new Master

Hi

I have created a Master File. I want to create another Master using the
existing Master. I did save as from the existing Master and gave a new name.
Now when I look into Predecessor Cloumn links have changed. I tried to copy
the predecessors once again from the Original Master to the New File. But
unavle to do so.

Cant we copy the predecessors? I also found in the New Master the Task ID's
have changed when I did save as, due to which the Predecessor links have also
changed. Now As the Predecessors are same how do we create a New Master with
the existing Master.

Thanks & Regards

Hi,

Master files use old DDE technology to share data. This is a strictly 1:1
ratio, so each sub-project can only connect to one master file and vice
versa. You have posted to the project server group, so I assume you have
server? If you have 2003 then you should not save master schedules to it.
2007 has resolved this issue.

An alternative way to allow you to create multiple master files is to insert
each project into the master with the Link option deselected. This copies
all data into the master with no link. If you always have the same files in
the master, record a macro of you inserting each project. To re-create a new
master each week simply run the macro! As there are no links, you can have
as many master files as you like. In addition this method consolidates all
resources so you see a consolidated resource view as well. Finally the
masters provide a great snapshot of all projects week by week as well.

Hi Gill,

If it doesnt update the Master then what do we do to update the master,
should we select the link option? But I dont want to do that as it will
impact some other functioning.

Thanks
