Copying only visible filtered data

Last week I posted a question asking if it was possible to only copy the
visible data in a filtered plan, before pasting it to another plan. When I
try this, I get all the visible data, plus all the "filtered oput" data being
copied and pasted.

Perhaps this was such an inane question that nobody bothered to answer, or
perhaps I'm just posting too many questions - still, as always, your help is
more than appreciated.

....if I can get this one right, I can set my appraisal targets for the end
of the year, 'cos I'll be able to attain them all, I think!

Pete,
Exactly how are you doing the filtering, copying and pasting? When I try
it on a sample file, the new file contains only the filtered data from
the test file.

Now, how much of your appraisal reward can I expect?

My project has a field containing the name of the team carrying out the work.
I apply a filter whose rule is <<TeamName>> = "Core Tools" (or whatever it
might happen to be)
I then select the resulting filtered tasks, copy them and paste them into a
new project - but the tasks for all the other teams are copied over too.

At first I was selecting all the tasks manually by clicking in the top left
hand corner of the plan - then I tried just highlighting the displayed rows,
but neither option works.

Any thoughts?

With regard to the appraisal money... I'm not on contractor rates, you know,
I have a wife and twenty hungry mouths to feed (cue violins etc)

Pete,
Unless there is something strange with your version of Project, copying
a filter set should paste into a new file exactly as I noted. By the
way, which version are you using?

The only possible reason I can fathom for getting more than the filtered
set in the paste operation is if the original file is not fully exploded
(i.e. all tasks shown). And as you found out, selecting all tasks via
the top left corner will select the entire file, even if what you see on
the screen is just the filtered set.

Something doesn't make sense but there has to be a reason.

Hello again - I replied to your post on the other board with a grovelling
apology - you can read it there!

I'm running Project 2000 9.0.2000.0224 - my plan has lots of Level 2 tasks
Individual projects within my department), each of which contains tasks and
sub tasks for more than one team thus:

Level 2 task (project)
Level 3 Team Identifier (e.g. "Core Tools")
Level 4 task
Level 5 task
Level 4 task
Level 5 task
Level 5 task
Level 4 task
Level 3 Team identifier (e.g. "Software Development")
Level 4 task
Level 3 Team identifier (e.g. "Storage Management")
Level 4 task
Level 5 task etc etc
Level 2 task (project)

etc etc

There is a column for Team identifier too, and each row contains the name of
the appropriate team. Each row is also formatted in a different text colour
for each team, so, for example, when I filter for the Software Develpment
team, using the "Team Identifier" field, all the resulting filtered rows are
green, and so on.

Could the problem be that the filtering I'm carrying out returns tasks and
sub tasks down to level 8 or 9 in some cases, and that if my tasks were just
a single level, I wouldn't have a problem? I created a simple list of 10
Level 1 tasks on a new plan, each allocated to one of three imaginary
employees, and when I filtered on one employee, and copied and pasted, what
was pasted was exactly what I would expect - i.e. just the rows for that
employee.

I'm stumped, I have to admit

Problem sorted! I found that I could copy and paste just what i wanted (i.e.
ahat I could see after the filtering) if I filtered without including summary
rows - the only problem was, I knew all the work a team had done, I just
couldn't see which project it was for..!

Project Header (level 2 - now not displayed due to suppression of header row
in filter parameters)
Core Tools (level 3)
Tasks - Level 4+c
Core Tools (level 3)
Tasks - Level 4+
Core Tools etc etc

So, I edited my level 3 team identifier tasks to include the name of the
project they are working on, in addition to who their team name and now
everything is OK!

Core Tools - Project A (level 3)
Tasks - Level 4+c
Core Tools - Project B (level 3)
Tasks - Level 4+
Core Tools - Project C (level 3) etc etc
Tasks - Level 4+

Thanks for your help - at last one that I sorted out all by myself - but
there's another new question on the board for somebody to have a look at..!

Pete,
I'm glad you solved your problem. I forgot about the effect of checking
or unchecking the "show summary tasks" in the filter.

I'm a big fan of including some project indicator in the Task Name for
just the reason you describe. Another option is to use the Project or
Subproject FIle fields to show the necessary information.
