Copying Outline/Bullets

I have a task I have to perform at work that includes
copying an outlined document into a new document format.
The original document consists of numbered, lettered,
and a bulleted outline. Because the entire outline will
not paste into the new document, if I copy and paste the
entire document, without the format going haywire, I have
to open the new document, create the individual outline,
and paste each line. Is there an easier way of doing
this? I hope I explained this so someone can understand
my dilemma.

Thank you

Two alternative ways of getting to the same place:

A. In the source document, modify the formatting so that your outline uses the built-in header styles. (There's much on this topic in the newsgroups and on the web. Be sure you link the heading levels with the appropriate outline levels.) If necessary, modify those styles in the document to the formatting you want. Then, copy and paste the whole outline into the destination document. If necessary, modify the heading styles in the destination document to tweak the final result.

B. In the destination document, modify the styles to create a multi-level outline using the heading styles. (As noted above, be sure to link the levels.) Link a hotkey shortcut to each heading style in your outline. Then try copying the entire outline to the destination document; maybe it will work. If not, then copy the outline and Paste Special into the destination document; paste as unformatted text. Now go through and, for each paragraph, press the appropriate hotkey to transform the paragraph into the appropriately formatted outline level.
