I tried to post this via mactopia, but it never showed up. So I'm
going to try to post via google groups just so people know about this.
(I've been working with Pat, and we figured out some things, so this
is a summary.)
This problem occurs with Excel 2008 with SP1 installed. I don't know
if it would have happened for me before I installed SP1.
I found this originally in a huge file, where a fairly large pivot
table was based on data 33 columns x 107+K lines. I copied and pasted
the pivot table, and then found that the next time I tried to save, I
got "Document not saved". Sometimes I would get a subsequent error
message telling me that autorecovery was no longer in operation
(sometimes not). It never got to the point of hanging/crashing excel,
however, and in my case, the "document not saved" message came up
pretty quickly.
Subsequent experimentation revealed the following:
• deleting the new pivot table allowed a save
• it didn't matter if the copied/pasted pivot table went into the same
worksheet or a new one
• it didn't matter if I tried to save right after pasting or after
doing a lot more work after
• I repeated all of this with a very small data set created from
scratch, creating a much smaller pivot table, and got the same result
(wouldn't save right after pasting the copied pivot table, then would
save if I completely deleted the pivot table).
• Pat was able to reproduce the problem with my smaller data set
• saving to .xls format did work, but for me that wasn't any good
because my original file was longer than the 65K lines allowed, and so
my data got truncated. If one is working with far less data, then I
*think* that would work ok. (Haven't tested it out beyond saving and
then noting that my file was shortened.)
This is surely not the only cause of "Document not saved", but it is a
consistently reproducible cause for me (and again, has been reproduced
by Pat at MacBU too). I won't even claim this will happen for
everyone. But if you like to copy and paste pivot tables, you might
want to check right after pasting the new pivot table to see if you
can save.
Hope this helps someone.
