Copying styles doesn't work

I'm running Word 2002 (from Office XP) on Win XP Pro. I have a document with
Heading styles in addition to other numbered, lettered and bulleted styles.
I made a template (separate document) using the same name styles. When I use
the Organizer to copy the styles from the template into the document, the
paragraph formatting gets lost in the target document. Font changes come
through okay, but Heading style indentation and lettered styles go haywire.
Half the styles just went to the left margin. How can I copy styles
effectively between documents? Thanks.

The styles are tied to whatever .dot file you are using. You have to have a
..dot file that contains the styles you built or like. Then go into new doc,
go to Tools, Templates & add-ins, open the .dot file you liked, add those
named styles to the current doc. Then select Automatically Update document
styles. Go impose those styles on whatever is goofy in your doc. Then go
right back and uncheck or de-select the Automatically Update document styles
because it is really danterous to leave on. It will bite you.

Try copying the styles 3 times in the Organizer. Provided you have set your
heading styles up correctly this should bring all the numbering (including
tabs and indents) across.
