Correct cell alignment in tables in Word

In working with large (ie multi-page) tables, it often happens that the sides
of some of the cells get out of alignment with the rest of the cells in the
same column. The reasons are varied, and are not really the issue. I want
to know how to get a more precise re-alignment than is possible by dragging
the column "handles" on the top ruler; this process does not allow infinitely
small movements, and often the re-aligned cell edges can only be positioned
to one side or the other of the adjoining cells.

Try holding down the Alt key while dragging. Also, increasing the zoom
ratio will allow you to be more accurate.

Sometimes it might be necessary to insert a row that has the correct cell
dimensions and then transfer the data into that row and delete the original
one.
