To repeat the problem (On Excel 2003 set to locale ZA - South Africa):
1) Get a valid referencable data value(1): Enter any value (such as 123) to
any cell not on column R (say cell H8)
2) Set a valid referene to this value(1): Proceed to another open (clear)
cell (say I5)and enter the reference by pressing "+"-key and then either
navigating to the cell (H8) with the key board arrows and then "Enter" or by
clicking with the mouse on the cell.
3) Get a valid referencable data value(2): Enter any value (such as 456) to
any cell in column R (say cell R9)
4) Set a valid referene to this value(2): Proceed to another open (clear)
cell (say I6) and enter the reference by pressing "+"-key and then either
navigating to the cell (R9) with the key board arrows and then "Enter" or by
clicking with the mouse on the cell (R9).
5) The last referencing cell (I6) now display (and uses) the currency value
R 9 instead of the numerical value of 456 (compared with cell I5's 123)
Comment: If I remember this problem also existed in Excel 2000 build 3xxx
but was corrected in 2000 build 6xxx (x - can't remember the digits)
Yes, I know I might be just about the only one that probably does input in
this way (without "="-key) but this was historically correct and I could not
find instructions to the contrary.
To bypass the problem: Never ever use the "+"-key to start input for a new
cell (especially for the ZA locale (Is there a DM column mixup in Germany
also?)
To correct the problem: Excel has to be compiled (by MS) with the cell input
first being evaluated as a numerical input (possibly with a "=" prepended?)
before being considerd as a currency input (on error condition?).
