Correct way to backup to cd?

V

Vince

I'd like to know the correct way to backup my web files to cd. The purpose
of the backup would be in case my computer should fail, the backup would then
be the copy that I would use to make further changes to the website.

I have been doing it by copying the web from My Webs to a cd. But I've
noticed that if I then copy the web from the cd back to the hard drive, the
web folder does not have the FP "globe" on it anymore.

Someone told me that the correct way to move the web is to open the web in
FP2002 and publish it to the cd.

So what is the correct way to backup the web to cd?

Thanks

Publish your web to a folder, burn the folder to the CD.

If and when you need to restore from the CD, you will need to go through the web and
remove the read only attribute from all of the files, because windows makes all files on a
CD Read only.

There are tools you can download that will do this for you.
One is called Remover Pro

Then the way I've been doing it seems to be the correct way. And my files
are not showing a read-only attribute.
So do you have any idea why the folder does not have the "globe" on its icon?

Thanks

Either because there is a hidden desktop.ini file in your web on your
computer which does not always get published or the vti file that it
references doesn't get published

It is the desktop.ini file that gives the folder the blue globe.

Opened in notepad it reads like this:

[.ShellClassInfo]
IconFile=_vti_pvt/fpdbw.ico
IconIndex=0
ConfirmFileOp=0
InfoTip=Stores your local web site

Which reminds me of a tweak I meant to post months ago and forgot about.

Because permissions are not copied to the CD.

Actually I just checked, it's the desktop.ini file that doesn't publish.

I've just checked, and the desktop.ini file is present and identical to what
you've posted, but the globe icon is still not there.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

The permissions are not published with the folder, so have the .ini is just a means of displaying a
icon with the folder.

Thanks for the info.
Can you give me more info on this. What are permissions, how do I get them
for this web, and is this normal behavior when a web is copied from a hd to a
cd and then from the cd to another hard drive?
Thanks

You have to open the folder in FP, and let FP make it a web.

I've just opened it in FP, and closed it. Still no globe icon. I think it
already had all the folders that FP usually adds to make it a web.

T

Ok, then open the folder in Windows Explorer and delete all of the _vti folders, then re-open in FP,
at that point FP should prompt you to let it make the folder a web / site.

I deleted the two _vti folders.
When I went to open the web after that, FP gave a message saying there is no
web at that location, and the only choice was an OK button. I clicked it, it
opened the "web". I closed it, and now if I go to open it again, it opens it
but shows no message at all about it not being a web, the _vti folders are
still missing, the globe is still missing..
By the way, I repeated the steps I took getting the web files to the laptop,
to see when the globe disappears. I copied the web from My Webs (on my
desktop computer) to the cd, and the globe is still there when I explore the
cd. I then copied the web from the cd to my laptop, and when explored on the
laptop, the globe is missing.

As a test, I copied the web from the cd back to the desktop computer. That
copy is missing the globe too.
Web was originally copied to the cd using Nero 5.5.

Thanks

You need to delete all of the _vti folder within the folder holding your web content.

OK I found more _vti folders inside the Themes, Overlay, Borders and Derived
folders. I deleted them, and when I opened the web in FP, it added the web
components as you said it would, and the globe is back, also as you said.

So, to get clear on all this - if I want to use a backup that I've copied
from a cd, is it necessary to delete all those _vti folders in order to use
it to publish to the server? Or is it only necessary if I insist on seeing
the little globe on the icon?
Thanks

The backup is not that important if you have your live/remote site hosted on a server that has the
FP extensions, then you will always be able to get current copy of your site if your PC crashes.

The best approach for backup, is to use Windows NT Backup available on Windows 2000 and Windows XP
CDs to back up to a second HD.
