Correcting Office 2000 Installer Configuratiion Errors

To all who find the same behaviour in Office programs:

Methods 1 & 2 (registry changes, etc) do not work as
discussed in:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=265194 "OFF2000:
Windows Installer Appears Every Time a Program Is Started".

The only method I have found that will work is:

Method 3(as modified by Kenn):

I discovered method 3 is only partially successful when MS
Access was fixed using the third method discussed in the
article above, but Winword and Excel still displayed
the "Installer applet" every time they were started even
after Access was corrected.

NOTE: If the original Office installation was from an
administrative install or from a network drive or network
CD ROM device, you MUST disable the network interface or
Office 2000 repeats the same mistake over again, and
again, and again! (I know. I tested it to be sure)
Reactivate your network interface ONLY after completing
the process for each misbehaving Office program.

Instead:

Reinstall Microsoft Access, AND Word AND Excel
(and/or a user may have to this with any other misbehaving
Office 2000 program)

(NOTE: Suggest that this be done one program at a time
with a graceful system restart between each correction.
This will make sure your registry was properly updated)

Method 3a: To resolve this problem, rename the
Msaccess.exe and System.mdw files, and then reinstall
Microsoft Access. To do this, follow the steps for your
computer's operating system.

NOTE: By default, the Msaccess.exe file is installed in
the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office9" folder,
and the System.mdw file is installed in the "C:\Program
Files\Common Files\SYSTEM" folder. <<<< THIS WORKS

Method 3b: Reinstall Microsoft WinWord

To resolve this problem, rename the Winword.exe file to
OLD_Winword.exe, and then click on the Winword icon in the
START > PROGRAMS folder, this will kick off the an
ORIGINAL install procedure, you will be prompted to insert
your original CD and then it will correct the problem with
Winword.

Method 3c: Reinstall Microsoft Excel

To resolve this problem, rename the Excel.exe file to
OLD_Excel.exe, and then click on the Excel icon in the
START > PROGRAMS folder, this will kick off an ORIGINAL
install procedure, you will be prompted to insert your
original CD and then it will correct the problem with
Excel.

====================================================
To do this, follow the steps for your computer's operating
system.

OTHER NOTE: Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows NT
4.0: Quit all instances of Word, including Microsoft
Outlook if Word is selected as your e-mail editor.
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or
Folders.

In the Named box, type Msaccess.exe.
In the Look in box, select your local hard disk. (If you
are running Word from a network server, select an
alternate user template location.)
Click Find Now to search for the file.
For each occurrence of the Msaccess.exe file that appears
in the Find program, right-click the file. Click Rename on
the shortcut menu. Name the file a new name, such as
OldMsaccess.exe or Msaccess.exe-1.dot, and then press
ENTER.
Repeat steps 3 through 6 to rename the System.mdw file.
On the File menu, click Close to close the Find dialog
box.
Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Microsoft
Access. If you are prompted for the application CD-ROM,
insert the CD-ROM, and then click OK to continue the
application Setup.
After Setup finishes, start Microsoft Access.
On the File menu in Microsoft Access, click Exit to quit
Microsoft Access, and then start Microsoft Access again.

Chris Schatte

use the Office Online web based newsreader here:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-
us/default.mspx

:
Running Win200 Pro with latest service packs. After a
systems crash after power / UPS failure, the Win200 system
would not boot. Then was due to Microsoft error in
repairing the boot device, I was forced to reinstall the
OS, as well as all service packs and other programs (as
administrator). WHAT A HASSLE

No issues were encountered with any other software except
with office 2000 professional!

Now everytime I start Word, Excel, or Access the
installer applet starts up, states it is 'Preparing to
Install' and indicates that it gathering 'configuration
information' and then starts the selected application.
This does not occur with the PowerPoint or Outlook
applications!

How can I stop this maddening behaviour? (See above)
Thanks.
