Corrupt document - please help!

I have a very important document that has gotten corrupted - it kinda looks
like it is something to do with show codes at first but it is not that..

all of my footnote/references have been corrupted
all my hyperlinks are shown as
!! HYPERLINK [web address followed by paragraph marker] hyperlink
all my images are shown as
!! INCLUDEPICTURE [web address of picture] \*

plus there is a whole section in the middle of the document that is acting
like a black hole!!! ;-)
