corrupt excel files

Don't know if I'm posting in the correct forum, but my
server at work went down. When we restored from a
backup, lots of excel files are now corrupt. Anyone know
of a way to fix them? Just individually, not everything
on the server. I see there are companies that charge to
fix, didn't know if there was anything to try without
sending them off. Thanks!

Can you open the file(s) in xl? What version?

If you can open a file, try to copy the data into a new workbook.

Try to open the file into the newest version of xl, if you have one.

Or insert the file into a new workbook.

This sounds unique in the fact that you have a lot of files suddenly
go corrupt at the same time. Take a look at the Recovery portion of
my web page on Backup and Recovery
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/backup.htm
Excel 2002 is noted as being good at restoring corrupted files, and
an even better reputation with Open Office, but in fact you may be
able to restore from the same version of Excel on someone else's
machine.

When I had a file go bad I had an advantage of knowing the sheet
I was last working on. When Excel 98 on another machine could
read my file without any problems I made two copies, one of the
complete file and one without the last sheet I was working on. Back
on my machine I could not read the complete file, but I could read the
one with the last sheet I worked on removed -- which was not
important to me.

Since you obtained your files from a backup, you have a backup.
I would try each method you try on an original restore.
