Corrupt file... Is there any hope?

Q

Hello,
Yesterday I finished up a powerpoint presentation for school. I saved
it and closed the program. Later, when I came back to burn it to a CD,
i went to open the file and got the message: Powerpoint cannot open
Macintosh HD:Users:quinnpeck:Documents:Flamenco.ppt because part of the
file is missing. I called both apple and microsoft and neither were
much help. The guy from apple said there could be a program i could
download that might retrieve some of the data. Anyone have any
thoughts? I really need help... Any insight at all is greatly
appreciated.

Thanks a ton.

And let me guess - You hadn't made a backup copy :-{

The first thing I would try is Disk Utility - Repair Disk (not Repair Disk
Permissions). The odds are that everything is there but the OS/PPt is having
trouble finding it all.

If the file is stored on your startup disk you will have to boot from
another system disk. You may also have to run the utility multiple times
until no errors are reported.

If that doesn't resolve the issue there is a program called Disk Warrior
which may be instrumental in recovering the file... although even that isn't
as effective 'after the fact' as it would be had it been installed prior to
the mishap. ($99.95 from the web site, but you can find it for ~$20 less if
you google for it... but worth every penny.)
