corrupt file

I made changes to an 07 project file. I saved it in 03. When I went to X
out it asked to save it again. I saved again. Then when I went to X out it
asked me again. I just got out w/o saving. I had saved the file fairly
recently. Now when I am trying to open the file it says corrupt content and
wont' open. Is there anything I can do?

Hi Penny,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

If you can't open it, I don't hold up much hope. You'll have to use you backup - you do have one don't you? You could try opening a new project and see if you can import the corrupt file into it (Insert/Project..). If you can get it open, see this: if you suspect a corrupt file, you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43. Handling project file corruption and/or bloat.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Penny, as per Mike's reply, this question has come up before. I've
experienced it myself and posted on it a couple of years ago. Unfortunately,
none of the suggestions referenced by Mike worked for me. Then, I was told
that installing Service Pack 1 would solve the problem for future "saves",
but I experienced it again after installing SP1. The only thing that I've
found to work is to always use "Save As" and a file extension of "Project
2000-2003", but that means each time I work with a file that is to be shared
with MSP 2003 users, I only use "save as" in the old format--awkward, but it
has avoided the problem for over a year.

Unfortunately I can't even get the file open to do any of these things.

Thanks for trying.

Where would I get the SP1?

I have had this problem before also in trying to go back and forth between
the two versions. I also have found that the save as and making sure I am
saving back to that 03 is vital. I did that twice... Bad file. Can't
imagine there is hope. Stinks.

Penny,

You'll need to go back to your last backup. I do hope you make backups.

you can get SP-2 (latest for Project 2007 which I understand includes
SP-1) from Microsoft. Via Google on "microsoft project sp-2" I found:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953326

I've never done any testing and perhaps other know, but it is my hunch
that moving back and forth between software format versions is probably
a risk for eventual file corruption. Maybe having SP-2 you can do do it
with less risk, but don't know. The format of the MPP file is extremely
complex and no doubt bugs lurk cross versions.

Without knowing more, I would always settle on a standard file format at
least common denominator for a project and stick with it.

Better yet, get everyone who uses Project to have exactly the same
version (including SP-level).

Ultimate would be avoid sending out MPP files if the purpose is only
communication. Don't send out data--send out documents with "snippets"
of the plan/schedule with your view/opinion.
