Corrupt fonts in Equation Editor for OfficeX?

Hi - When I first installed OfficeX under OS 10.2.6, Equation Editor
worked fine for awhile (several weeks), then suddenly the single dot
which goes over a letter started showing up as a double less than sign
(<<). Is this a corrupt font problem? I've tried changing my default
font styles in Equation Editor, but no matter what font I select, it
still prints wrong now (though sometimes after first changing the font
style, it will print correctly for 1 time, then revert to << again. I
know OSX has multiple font folders - where is Equation Editor looking
for its fonts? Help! Thanks in advance...

P.S. I know some people who have had this problem under OS9 as well
and they never did figure out what caused it.

I don't know what's causing it either, but the first thing I'd try
(with all Office apps closed) is deleting these files from the
~:Library:preferences:Microsoft folder (where ~ is your home
directory):

Office Font Cache (10)
Equation Editor Preferences
