Corrupt fonts message.

I went from Tiger back to Panther on my G4-500. Because Panther wouldn't
install.

Anyway I opened Excel after all the getting everything back to normal
and a message came up on every font family I had in my collection was
corrupt and needed to be removed.

I used FontDoctorX to Check and all fonts except three fonts that had
names like MT 18 , MT 24, and something else wit MT in it said it was
missing the Postscript font. All other fonts checked perfect.

What with this message. I've seen this once before and best I could
remember once the font list had been created seemed to work fine.

Anyone seen this.

Hi Phillip,
Can you please tell me the office version and os version you see this on .
Searching for duplicate fonts using font book and removing any such
duplicates may solve this problem . Please let me know if this solves your
problem .
Thanks,
Priyanka

priyanka,

i don't know why you're so surprised. everyone seems to be having this
problem. i'm having it with both excel and word, both version 11.1.

i had it with word first and was told to restart in safe mode to clear
the font cache, and then everything would be fine. well i did that,
and word worked for a while and then it happened again. and now i
launch excel for the first time since upgrading to tiger and it's
happening with that too. this despite the fact that i cleared the font
cache twice already--once by restarting in safe mode and once by
running the utility font finageler.

besides, re: duplicate fonts, it's my understanding that even if you
remove duplicate fonts in font book, once you clear the font cache all
your fonts come back. the only way to get rid of duplicates
permanently in tiger is to purge them from your file system.

anyway, ms needs a tiger update.

thank you.

Hi Loren ,

I posted this yesterday but it looks like it didn't make it here
because it has a screenshot attached. For the screen shot, see
alt.binaries.test (look for this title).

Priyanka,

Once again I don't know why you are surprised. Microsoft is a very
large company, I can't believe no one in Mac development is having this
problem with Tiger. This happens to me with both Word and Excel on two
machines. Clearing the font cache works for a while, but the problem
resurfaces later. I'm currently going through about 25 or 30 "corrupt"
font messages in Word, for the third or fourth time since upgrading to
Tiger. It's really supremely irritating since it takes a very long
time to get through.

The screen shot will not do you much good. It's just a dialog that
says "The font (fontname) is corrupt and should be removed."
Nevertheless I will post a screen shot with this message, and in case
the attachment doesn't work, also on alt.binaries.test.

This seems to affect fonts in every location:

/System/Library/Fonts
/Library/Fonts/
~/Library/Fonts/
System Folder/Fonts/ (classic)

some that come up:
verdana
vt100
warnock (various versions)
zeitguys two
zenith
zapfino
+ a bunch of asian fonts that display wrong in the dialog (bad unicode?)

It seems obvious that most of these are alphabetically V and up. So
maybe there's a limit to the number of fonts, then they're all corrupt
after that. I don't even need all those fonts or have any real idea
where they came from, except accumulation over the years and probably
installing a font collection or two. But NB, disabling unneeded
fonts in font book does not seem to persist after clearing the font
cache.

You might believe it more if you realized that all of MacBU comprises
less than 200 people, including marketing and admin.

FWIW, I work with local school districts with about 800 machines
(roughly 1/3) running Tiger and Office 2004. So far, none of them have
shown any problems with corrupt fonts.

OK the MacBU is smaller than I thought. They've done some really good
work, and I appreciate it, for sure.

But if you look at just these usenet groups (this one, .word, .office)
you'll see half a dozen people at least who have reported this problem.
Considering that the people who use MS Office who also post in usenet
groups is very small, that mean a lot of people are having this issue
with Tiger. That should be enough to prompt some quick testing, I
would think, at least enough to isolate the problem within a a couple
days of the release of Tiger. It seems the relavent thing to do if
the MacBU still can't reproduce it in house is to ask us what fonts we
have installed and where, rather than show me a screen shot--which is
not likely to be of much use. I can type what the dialog box says.

If the problem is evenly distributed among MacOffice users, I agree.

It's possible, though, that there's a common thread among a smaller
subset of users, more of whom have found their way to the ng. Note that
these are not really usenet groups. MS hosts the msnews server, which is
distributed via nntp, but it's also accessed via several web portals,
and users seeking support help from MS are directed here from the
MacTopia site.
That should be enough to prompt some quick testing, I would think, at

Hmmm... There was a single post in the m.p.m.o* hierarchy two days
before Tiger release, then a second more than a week later. That's
hardly a groundswell for MacBU to jump on "within a couple days of the
release of Tiger". And since the OP never reported back, one could
reasonably assume that one of the proposed solutions worked.

What criteria are you using to say that they should be able to isolate a
problem within a couple of days? There's still, based on my rereading of
the threads, zero consistency in the reports.

I understand your frustration, but I think your expectations may be
somewhat skewed.
It seems the relavent thing to do if the MacBU still can't reproduce
it in house is to ask us what fonts we have installed and where,

That might make sense. If you and others having the problem post the
contents of your four font folders, that might be helpful...

....but it might not, too. You'll need to post more details than just the
font names, since people may have a number of fonts that come from
different sources, in different versions.

*AND*, if MS can't reproduce the error with stock Tiger fonts and stock
Office fonts, how much effort should they put into a bug of someone
else's making? Certainly they're investigating, if for no other reason
than trying to satisfy their customers. But unless there's a lot more
consistency in reports, it's likely a goose chase.
rather than show me a screen shot--which is not likely to be of much

I've no earthly idea what a screen shot would tell them, but at this
point I'd probably give them one...

Hi Loren,

Thanks for your post. I need some more details from you

1.. the upgrade scenario
1.. What OS version were you running before the upgrade (Where you had
no problems )
2.. What option did you choose while upgrading
3.. What version of OS did you start seeing the problem on
2.. What version of office did you have before
1.. Did you reinstall office after the OS install /upgrade
2.. If you reinstalled did you install a different version what is the
version now

3.. What are the contents of your font folders ( all 4 of them )
1.. Did you disable / move / delete any fonts
2.. before/After upgrading the OS did you change any fonts
(disable/move/delete)
3.. If you have any fonts that are not shipped with office /OS can you
provide those too

I'll try to mimic your machine using this information. If you have any
machine on which you are not seeing this problem, then can you compare the
font's folders and tell me how the two are different: are there different
fonts, were different upgrade methods used etc.

All this information will be very useful. You can send it to me at
(e-mail address removed) . Thanks again

Regards,

Priyanka
