Corrupt MIME Message when Attaching Word Doc

Enrico Spada

Hello everyone,

All of a sudden I am having difficulties sending emails with Word docs as
attachments (and actually sometimes without attachments).

When I try to send email with a word doc attached, my receivers get
something like this, without the attachment (note that the following
response was to a message sent WITHOUT an attachment):

With an attachment, my receiver gets a huge mess of garbled code in addition
to the above. I have since begun sending only Plain Text message instead of
HTML, but even this causes the same problems.

I am using Entourage on a Microsoft Exchange server at work, could this be
part of the problem?

Let me know if I can provide you with more info. I'm using Leopard (10.5.2)
on a brand-new iMac (one month old) and Entourage 2008 (version 12.0.1).

Thanks for your assistance.

I just found something that might also be of help: soon after sending one
such email (with a word doc attached) I received an email with the subject
"Antigen Notification: Antigen found a message matching a filter" which
read:

Microsoft Antigen for Exchange found a message matching a filter. The
message is currently Purged.
Message: "Playbill Bios"
Filter name: "IllegalMimeHeader"
Sent from: "Enrico Spada "
Folder: "SMTP Messages\Inbound And Outbound"
Location: "UMail/First Administrative Group/SMTP1"

Some people received the email, so I assumed they all did (I sent to 9
addresses). My IT manager didn't know what to make of this (the office is
primarily a Windows office, there is very limited Mac support).

Thanks again to anybody who can help me sort out this thing. I have over 100
bios to collect from people all over the place and a printing deadline
looming over my head. There's a virtual hug waiting for my savior.

All best,
Enrico

I have a similar problem. I am running new iMac with Entourage 2008. We use a
hosted Exchange server (Mailstreet.com). All of a sudden email attachments
could not be read by recipients. They would get a "file corrupt" message. I
checked all the settings again and again to no avail. To get the issue
resolved I had to go to the native Mac Mail program and use IMAP to use my
hosted Exchange account. Problem fixed but now I can't synch my address book.

Copy yourself on some of these messages and I suggest using a second
account that is not part of the same E-mail system. For example, since
you have an Exchange server for your company then copy the message to a
Gmail or Hotmail account. When you receive through your second account
do you see the problem yourself?

In Entourage, is your Format --> Character Set using Automatic or have
you selected something else?

My guess is that maybe your messages or your document name contains
accented characters and your server or your recipient's server is having
problems dealing with them. MIME encoding basically makes your message
compatible with other E-mail servers and your recipient's E-mail client
needs to be able to unencode the messages it receives.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Why not try Advanced Word Repair at http://www.datanumen.com/awr/ ?
It recovers several important Word documents for me and is really
helpful!

Hi,

I am also getting this message when sending email but seems to be only when I use an email group. I am not attaching any files to these emails.

"This message is in MIME format. Since your mail reader does not understand this format, some or all of this message may not be legible."

My character set is set to Automatic. Sending from Entourage 2008 on a MAC OS 10. I do have SP1 for Entourage installed. My email account is a standard msn account. I'm guessing its my free email account but cannot confirm.

any ideas

David, your issue is very different from the original poster's issue and
question. I suggest you not interject your question in this person's
problem but start your own new thread. Multiple problems within a thread
can be confusing to others looking for answers.
