corrupt page setup settings

Having a problem with Microsoft Word 2007 where the page setup "page source"
settings are messed up (for both the first page and other pages) with corrupt
characters and offset so I cannot see all the settings. I tried renaming the
default template Normal.dotn and this got rid of the corrupt characters but
it still does not look correct as the text is all offset. What other settings
files or templates might I need to look at to resolve this issue?

thanks,

Usually it is a registry corruption. Run Regedit and navigate to the key
DATA and with Data selected, press DELETE. Word will create a new key as
soon as it is restarted.

Word DataKey

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

Thanks for the information, but this begs another question.

It seems the key is user specific and the user does not have admin on the
machine. Can the key still be changed if the user logs off to allow an admin
to log on?

Thanks,

I think it will be easier to raise the User to an Admin, delete the key,
test Word and then regress him to a User again.

Thanks for all your help,

I tried removing the DATA key, which rebuilt itself as you said, but that
did not resolve the problem.

This ended up being a corrupt/conflicting printer as clearing out the
registry keys for the offending printer drivers solved the issue.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Print\Environments\Windows
NT x86\Drivers\Version-3\<printer driver name>

Was it an HP printer?

Yes, the problem printer was an HP 4730 color laser.

I just stumbled upon the very same problem again today (2 months later),
with the several more machines connected to the same network printer. I think
the best way to resolve this is not remove the keys from
currentcontrolset001, but the currentcontrolset itself. that way the only way
I was able to resolve the problem on my own workstation.
