Corrupt Word Doc?

I have a Word doc that has 290 pages. I've inserted a page number in
the footer. The pages are numbered correctly up to page 178 then the
next page jumps to page 284 and continues to 390+ pages even though
the doc is really only 290 pages long. Somehow a section break has
been inserted between the pages numbered 178 and 284 (the document has
been passed around and edited by several different people). I've
tried to remove the section break but can't. I've also tried to run
the Detect and Repair but that didn't change anything.

Also, the document is 8.53 MB in size and I would expect it to be
around 850 KB since there are no graphics or anything that would take
up that much space inserted. It's mainly just text with a small table
at each chapter heading. Does anyone know how to resolve the page
number issue or have any thoughts about the large file size? Thanks!

If it's only text, this is easy.

Open the file in Word and save it as a text document. Open the new text
document and resave it as a Word document. Problem solved.
