Corrupted Project Data - How to fix?

L

ljsexton

Hoping someone can point me into a direction for recovery. Problem: during a
project task publish today connection to the MSSQL server dropped. Was not
able to gracefully close project, could not close could not do Offliine save
so did file Save As to my hard drive then closed the EPS project file. The
next time I opened it several hours later after assurances that problem with
the MSSQL Server had been corrected - the project file opened but with a
circular reference to a task that I knew could not have this problem...anyway
I said ok and continued to open project- only could not see any of the tasks,
could run reports and it appeared the data was there but just could not see
any tasks. I kept changing views until finally coming back to the tasks view
on about the 10th try the tasks were visible and I could see why the circular
reference was occurring. All of the tasks were scrambled - nothing in the
place it should be - QUESTION: Is there anyway to restore a single Project
from Backup or any other suggestions how to fix a corrupted Enterprise
Project File?
Sincerely

Is the .mpp copy of your project a good working copy, or is it the one with
the crazy circular reference error? If your .mpp copy of the file is a good
working copy, ask your Project Server administrator to delete the old
project from the Project Server database and then you can import the .mpp
file back into the Project Server database. Ask your PS administrator to
refer to the following FAQ if the project has Risks, Issues, or Documents
associated with it:

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Shared Documents/DeleteProjectWithoutSubweb.htm

If the .mpp copy of your file is corrupted, as is the one in the Project
Server database, then your Project Server administrator can restore a single
project from the last database backup. Refer to the following FAQ for the
directions:

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Shared Documents/RestoreProject.htm

Hope this helps.

Hello Dale.
thanks for your prompt reply. Yes, the mpp copy is a good working copy. My
only concern about deleting the corrupted project file is how to clean up the
resource data on PWA. All of our resources input actual time worked on their
task assignments. Will deleting this project automatically delete all of
their time entries? Once I replace with good copy I would think I would need
to Republish all assignments and overwrite the resources PWA time with info
from the working copy of the project file. Can you provide any additional
info on how to insure the integrity of the resources PWA time entries and
ensure they are in sync with the newly loaded project?
PS: I am the PS Administrator as well as project manager. I will review the
info from the url you provided as this project does have a large number of
documents associated to it loaded in the document library which I do not want
to loose. I first thought I would just download all of them and reload once
the project is reloaded and healthy again. Hoping maybe there is an easier
way.

Since the .mpp file is a good working copy, delete the project saved in the
Project Server database but do not delete the projects's WSS subweb (use the
FAQ for the steps to do this). Import your .mpp project into Project Server
using the Import Projects wizard. After doing so, click Collaborate -
Publish - All Information. Then click Collaborate - Publish - Republish
Assignments, select the "Overwrite actual work entered by resources" option,
and then click OK. This will "push" your resource and timesheet data back
to PWA to "synch up" the information between the project and PWA. Hope this
helps.
