Corrupted table error in Word 2000 document

I have a large document I'm trying to open that contains a few tables.
When I open it; then the program just goes to the hourglass wait stage
and eventually says the errors below. Then Word 2000 closes.

I went all through the Microsoft knowledge database and it said at
some point the table problem was fixed in Word XP.
Yet I took it to a friends house with Word XP and the same thing
happens.

I want to recover the document but as soon as I put in the password
and press enter only the first page appears and I can't scroll or save
the document afterward.

This is the error "a table in this document has become corrupted. To
recover the contents of the table: select the table and choose Convert
Table to Text from the Table menu I Clicked "OK" in the error
box and get this error signature

"ERROR SIGNATURE" app name winword.exe app ver 9.0.0.8216 Mod
Name: mso9.dll Mod Ver: 9.0.0.6926 Offset: 00010ecc

I hope someone can tell me how to recover from this.

There are instructions for recovering corrupted documents in the article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;212274. I'm not
sure how well this will work when you have password-protected the
document (adding a password encrypts the file, which could have
contributed to it becoming corrupt). A wise person might attempt this
recovery procedure on a copy of the document, not on the original
document...

There is a good article at
http://www.word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/CorruptDoc.htm about how
documents become corrupted. Unfortunately the "fixes" described in the
article assume that you can open the document, which you can't.

If the password encrypts the document; why can I read some words when
I use the mouse over the file in Explorer view?
And can I view using a hex editor?

What you see when mousing over the filename in Windows Explorer is one
of the document properties that Word stores in the file. If you had the
file open, you would find this data in File | Properties | Summary |
Title. I don't know enough about hex editors to comment.
