Corrupted Word Files

I am having a problem reading saved MS Word files. Either they refuse to open
at all or they display corrupted and unreadable data.
The files were created with Word 2000 using Windows XP SP2, and I am trying
to read them on the same computer using the same Word 2000 with Windows XP
SP2.
I have tried to use several programs that promise to repair the files, but
they don't work.
Can anyone help?

Has anything else happened such as the files were archived off on some form
of removable media or have they always simply been sitting on the local HDD?
Have you had a disk fail and had to install anew HDD?

What happens if you try to open a document in WordPad. Can you see all the
text without the formatting?

I am having same problem no matter how I try to open it, it can not be read,
does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do ? have over 45 pages saved
need to get them back
