cost rollup only calculates after pressing F9 in project

after inserting custom column with a formula ,and the roll up function to sum
project wont rollup the amounts to summary tasks, it only rolls up after I
press F9

When you create a custom task field containing a formula, and then you
insert the field in any task view, you must perform some action to get the
system to recalculate the project. Pressing F9 is the manual way to do
this. From this point forward, however, the system will automatically
recalculate your custom field formula along with the rest of the project.

I dont understand what you mean by action,
I have inserted 3 simple custom columns 1 for qty 1 for unit cost and 1 for
totall cost
the qty column rolls up instantly, but not the total cost

Are you saying that the F9 key does not cause the quantity column to
recaluclate? Let us know.

--I dont know that!. As soon as I update a qty it instantly updates the summary tasks and then the total project.
both custom columns, the qty and the total cost have the same definitions
except there is a simple formula for the total cost column.
the updated total cost at task level is instant
