Could not creat the work file. Check the temp environment varria.

I encountered this message after I transfered files from my flash drive then
"safely removed" it and then opened Word. For some reason I believe Word is
now using the D: drive to creat it's temp work file.

When I plug the flash drive back in and re-open Word, everything works fine.
If I "safely remove" the drive, Word eventually crashes.

The problem I have is I cannot find where in Office or Word is pointing to
this drive. The evironment tables in the main windows operating system are
pointing to the C: drive.

My next step is to re-install Office, but I would prefer to solve this in
the event that it happens again. I have seen a few people who have
encountered the same problem. I can tell you that it has something to do
with either a failed network drive or a flash drive that office is trying to
use.

Do you have any documents cashed in the Word MRU that were opened directly
from the flash drive before transferring to the local HDD?

I don't believe so. I think this problem may even deeper than I suspected.
I could not uninstall Office without plugging in my flash drive as it could
not find the d: drive (the drive assigned to my flash drive).

I plugged in my flash drive.
Uninstalled Office.
"Safetly removed" my flash drive.
Then re-installed office.

Same warning came up.

"Outlook could not create the work file. Check the temp envioronment
variable"

Same message opening Word but reads 'Word' in place of 'Outlook'

Just to be certain, how do I remove cached files?

Office 2007

Also - all files pointers in File Location point to the C: drive (as opposed
to the nonexistent D: drive) which is correct. If you solve this you will be
a hero. I have seen a bunch of other people with the same problem, and no
one has been able to come up with a viable solution.

No pressure.

I'm seeing the same error, but only when the file is on a network share.
Excel can't read or write files on the network share either, but it gives a
different message -- it just says that it couldn't open the file.

Test with Word in Safe Mode to see if you have the same problem. From Start,
Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Do you get the same errors now?

thanks for all.

i have the same problem which trouble me for days including the 'work file'
and 'cant insert image in word 2007', i take some minutes to fix it.

i have used removable media and 'ramdisk' to set another system 'temp'
location.

please try this:

run regedit

search your flash disk/removable disk/ramdisk which might caused this
problem, i.e. my ramdisk is 'x:/' and temp folder is 'x:/temp', i searched
'x:' and then deleted all regedit items with 'x:/temp' value manually, most
of which are ***.tmp.

return to desktop, and launch the ms word, ok now.

hope be helpful.
