Could not lock file

Mike

Good morning,
I have an access 2000 database shared over my network.
I have a folder that contains the database shared out to
certain users. They have read only access in that
folder. If one of the people that have read only access
to the folder opens up the database, no one else that has
read only access can. It gives the error, cannot lock
file. Is this something that I can change in the
permissions of the folder? Most of the people I work with
know jack about computers and I don't want them to delete
anything. Please let me know what I need to do. Thank
you for your time.

Respectfully,
Mike

Users need modify permissions on the folder (read, write, create, delete) in
order to create the associated ldb file. With only read permission, the
first person in can't create the ldb, and the mdb is opened exclusively.

You may be concerned about giving them delete permissions on the folder --
you can hide the share i.e. put the mdb in \\server\share$ rather than
\\server\share. That will hide it in Windows Explorer, but savvy users can
still open the folder if they know the path/name.

That may be enough to keep them out, but of course, you need a sound backup
plan.
