could not open macro storage - mounting home directories over AFP/NFS

T

the clerk

Hello

I get the following error when trying to launch the visual basic editor
- "could not open macro storage"
and another error when trying to create a macro - "the macro could not
be created". (Actually the larger issue here is that Mathtype 5 won't
insert eqns inline, but the two problems seem related, see the
complication below).

Word 2004 (11.1)
Mac OS 10.3.7

Now, the complication is that the errors only come up when logged into
the mac as a network user, with a home directory on a server (Mac OS
10.3 Server). Everything works fine when logged in a a local user with
a home directory on the local hard disk. The machines in question are
in a general access lab, so local user accounts won't work...

I've tried mounting the home directories using both AFP and NFS and the
problem occurs in both cases...
Anyone else run into this problem, or can provide insight?

Thanks!

The first thing to look for is a Windows Word macro in the Normal template
of the userID concerned. That could contain calls to Windows libraries that
do not exist on the Mac. Be careful: there's a non-zero chance that the
macro in question is a virus.

The next thing to check is that the network Normal template is writeable by
only ONE user. Word's normal template must be read/write/execute/remove and
exclusive to the user. If you set it read-only, you can get all sorts of
peculiar errors.

The user must also have full permissions to the Temp directory.
