Could not save this message. Not enough memory.

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: Exchange

I have been having a few Entourage problems recently. For weeks, My Day crashed upon startup. I have also been unable to send attachments for weeks - the message appears to send, but never gets to the recipient.

Then, after leaving my computer idle for 3 weeks, I updated to Mac OS 10.5.8 AND to Office 12.2.0 in the same day. Since then, two things happen. 1) Entourage crashes when opening certain messages. 2) When replying to a message and clicking Send, I get the message "Could not save this message. Not enough memory."

I have searched the forum. I have followed the advice listed under a closed thread "Not enough memory" and checked my fonts as directed. I also cleaned my system cache using Spring Cleaning.

I always keep all apps updated and run TechTool Pro diagnostics regularly. Any more suggestions?

Updating to 12.2.1 is crucial! It fixes a bug introduced in 12.2.0.

Spring Cleaning could do more damage than good. I never recommend
applications that do blanket removal.

I doubt memory is the problem, but just to verify...how much RAM do you have
installed?

How much free space do you have on your drive? Don't know how to find out?
See this page: <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/performance2.html>

When you updated to 10.5.8, did you use the combo updater or did you use
Software Updater? You can try running the combo over your current install,
but it might take an "Archive & Install" to fix your problems.

Download the combo updater from Apple and run it again rather than using
Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update (For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )
<http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update>

Archive and Install

1) Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X
icon.

2) Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the
destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will
be the only one available).

3) Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and
network settings, select ³Archive and Install,² and then select ³Preserve
Users and Network Settings.² If you want to erase everything on your
computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select ³Erase and Install.² You can¹t
recover erased data.

4) Click Continue.

5) Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you¹d like to install,
or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).

Once the install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the
disk you have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.5.0, that's what
version of OS will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate
Combo Updater from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher version.
After you run the combo, allow Software Update to download and install any
additional updates.

Thank you for your lengthy response. The extent of your recommendations tells me either you are just extremely thorough, or I have some potentially major issues to resolve...... Here's my initial reply, with more to follow.
Updating to 12.2.1 is crucial! It fixes a bug introduced in 12.2.0.

My other Macs ran both updates one after another, but on this machine Microsoft AutoUpdater stopped at 12.2.0. I just ran it again and it reported "There are no updates available..." so I downloaded "Office2008-1221UpdateEN" from Mactopia. I ran the installer and was told "A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume." I don't know how to get past this.

I am currently downloading the recommended OSX Combo update. Your advice on this seems to be contradictory; you wrote that "there is no need to roll back" then listed instructions for a disk-based Archive and Install, which seems to do just that. I will try simply running the installer and report back tomorrow.

When you installed 10.5.8 did you restart before running the 12.2.0 updater?
If not this is where your problems could have started.

The error, "A version of the software required to install this update was
not found on this volume." you are seeing has been frequently reported. Some
users have had to restart several times before the temp folder that was
created by the installer is unlocked. For help with this issue see:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/not_found.html>

A combo and "Archive & Install" can be applied over the same version. A
combo does not roll you back, but it does refresh all files where the
incremental updaters only do the newest files. The "Archive & Install" rolls
you back and puts you at the base install.

When a user has a lot of unexplained issues like you reported, sometimes
rather than chasing a solution, it's easier and quicker to start with a
fresh slate.

Hope this helps!

I appreciate your trying to help, but unfortunately I now find myself in a much worse situation. I decided to try the Archive and Install option you mentioned after all. Having gone this route before over the years and managed several Macs, I was careful to be sure "Archive and Install" was checked, as well as "Preserve Users and Network Settings" box. Then I clicked on "Customize" to uncheck the added printer drivers, languages, etc.

Once the process was completed and the machine rebooted, I was horrified to discover my Network Account was NOT preserved. I can no longer log on to my office network, and "No Network Accounts Available" appears on the login screen. However, the three standard user accounts were all preserved with their files intact.

The Previous Systems does include the network user folder, so I guess I'll go read up now about how to restore that.....................

Ouch! Sorry you had a bad experience, but it's not clear if this is your
setting in System Preferences Network or if it's your Entourage settings.

You should be able to go into the "Previous System Folder" and find that
preference to drag over.

I installed the MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8 update. Upon restart, I was able to log on to my Network account again. Strange. All preferences were wiped out but that is probably expected.

So I then went to the Office2008-1221UpdateEN update I had downloaded. Believe it or not, the update STILL gave me the error message "A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume." So after all this trouble rolling back to 10.5 and installing the 10.5.8 Combo, the Office update will STILL not install. Swell.

The 12.2.1 requires that 12.2.0 be installed. Did you skip 12.2.0 (SP2)?

W

Since the reinstall process updated the system software and not applications, yes I have 12.2.0 since that's what I have been trying to apply the update to for the last 2 days.

I decided not to use the existing Identity saved on my HD, but to import the Exchange Server database instead. While doing so, I did some testing and found:
• I CAN now send emails with attachments, something I haven't been able to do for weeks.
• I have also tried opening many different emails, and none has caused Entourage to crash.
• I have tried replying to a few emails and have not received the Not Enough Memory error, or any other error.

So although I still cannot install the 12.2.1 update, the problems I initially reported may have been solved. :) Since it will take me quite a while to reset/restore other app preferences/settings, I'll post again when I've tested further.

It appears that all is now resolved; all Entourage problems are gone, and I even notice Office apps now launch much more quickly.

As for the Office Update, it took several attempts to get past the "A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume" roadblock but it appears to now be settled. All Office apps now show:

Version 12.2.0 (090605)
Latest Installed Update 12.2.1

Somewhat confusing perhaps, but apparently successful. If so, I no longer have any issues to resolve. Thanks again for your help, Diane.

The Microsoft Component Plugin is the true test of any upgrade. Not all
Microsoft applications are upgraded with each update so the version of the
application could differ from the installed update.
