Couldn't find file SYSTEM.MDW

D

DJW of HSL

I have updated a laptop from WindowsMS to WindowsXP and re-installed Office
2000 SR1 Professional. I cannot start MsAccess now. Whenever I try it goes
through a repair cycle then says that it couldn't find file System.mdw. Can
antone tell me how I can fix this please?

(Sorry if this is a repeat but I keep getting a message that this site is
too busy and I should try to post this meassage again) .

When you upgraded from ME (?) to XP, did you wipe the system clean and start
from scratch or did you just dump one OS on top of the other?

Do you have more than one version of Access on that system?

D

DJW of HSL

I installed XP over the top of MS (I didn't re-format)

The laptop in question only has the one version of Access on it.

Sorry. I do of course mean Windows ME.

I'm a firm believer in doing a clean install rather than just dumping one on
top of the other. All kinds of issues tend to creep up on you.

Did you search your system for that file? Have you tried uninstalling Office
and reinstalling it? Or even just a repair?

I'm finding references to that problem but all seem to be based on Office
97.

Yes, I did search for msAccess and only got the single version.

I have tried an Office repair, then a remove and re-install, neither of
which fixed the problem.

I have also searched for the problem on the Internet. Several people talk
about using wkgrpadm.exe but I don't have that (whatever it is!) on my system.

I am reaching the stage where I will do a 'clean' installation of XP but I
thought I would try asking here first.

Try posting your question over in the Access newgroups. Those Access MVPs
are frigging geniuses. I've been working with some of them on a task for
work and I am in awe. They blow me away with the stuff they know. ;-)

As suggested later down the thread check with an Access group. Once you've
fixed it keep a copy of system.mdw somewhere safe because you will need it
next time you re-install. I don't know what causes but it is a PITA.
