Counting Characters including spaces in a Word Document in Word 20

I know that Word counts the words as you type and you can select text and get
a count but sometimes for our proposals we are also limited in the number of
characters including spaces. Can Word 2007 do this?

Do you have your running Word Count showing in your Status Bar at the
bottom? If you do, click once on it and a box opens showing, among
other things, the character counts with and without spaces.

If you don't have it showing, right-click on the Status Bar and choose
it from the possibilities.
