Counting/Summary of table columns

We need to do a summary of columns in a Access Table. I
cannot get it to "total" the number of entries when they
are alpha characters. We need to summarize both number
and letters in a column of entries.
That is how many A's in field A1, how many 2's in field
A1 etc.
Any ideas how I can do this.

Could you enter about 8-10 records and then the desired display results?

in a crosstab query, create a mid$ for each position in the field.
