Counting with conditions in Excel

I have a small spreadsheet and want to Count the number of
times a word or phrase in one column co-incides with a
word or phrase in an adjoining column.

eg.
A B
up left
up left
down left
down right

How many times does down and left occur in the range A1-B4?

alternatively use the SUMPRODUCT function

=SUMPRODUCT((A1:A4="down")*(B1:B4="left"))
