Crash loop, sync page error msg, and two file locations?

J

Jonathan

I have two problems and they may be related and causing the crash of ON2007.

First,
I closed some notebooks with a right click -- to remove extra icons from my
vertical toolbar on the left. I believe I am having trouble retrieving one
notebook as a whole notebook. It does not show up in Windows explorer as I
expected. There is a Folder under My Notebook with that name, "Personal" --
but the files inside that don't look familiar. But there is also a folder in
MyDocuments called "One Note Notebooks" and it has some folders in there that
share names with folders in the "My Notebook" folder. I am rushing to beat
the end of my battery (no AC cord with me here) so cannot investigate file
change time/date info.)

I had a keystroke dedicated to pulling up my personal ToDo page (from
Rasmussen's tips on his ON blog.) Invoking that keystroke brings up one of
the missing pages -- and OneNote crashes! After sending the error report MS
informs me that I have bug that will be corrected. OK, good. However, having
asked at the time of the crash to restart ON I am now in an endless loop: ON
crashes almost as soon as it opens. I quit before one of the crashes and
reopened. So far good, except I want the other pages back, of course. This
ToDo page from my "Personal" section is a page which DOES NOT show in the
diplay of "All Notebooks" at the bottom of the screen when I click the "All
notebooks" icon.

Now, Second, I have this error bar on four pages in a Notebook/Section that
opens with OneNote:

"This page has changes that could not be merged during synchronization.
Click here to show versions of the page with unmerged changes." -- seen on
four pages. A diamond icon with two opposing arrows shows in the bar and on
the page tab of all the affected pages.

I look at Help for folder location and naming convention help but found none
I admit I have seen other discussions here about folder locations. I do not
remember references to two locations for the ON files.

I run ON2007, Outlook 2007 and the rest of the Office suite in 2007. I have
never installed ANY of the 2003 versions of these programs on this laptop. I
work on a laptop only in XPPro SP2 on a tablet. I have never attempted sync
to a desktop. Error bar messages appear in one Notebook, as far as I can tell.

Hi Jonathan,

You should prob. reopen your notebook again. I am sure you can figure
out which one it is by just opening both Personal ones in ON and looking
at it. Just use File, Open Notebook and open both to compare them.

You actually discovered a feature of ON 2007. If you open externally
e.g. a page that is not in a currently opened notebook, ON will try to
open that page for you. It only stays open for that session of ON
though. You really need to reopen your notebook.
Now, Second, I have this error bar on four pages in a Notebook/Section that
opens with OneNote:

"This page has changes that could not be merged during synchronization.
Click here to show versions of the page with unmerged changes." -- seen on

the page tab of all the affected pages.
Right-click on the yellow bar and that should show you some option to
get further with this (I think it's an option to show the problematic
section). If you keep right-clicking on yellow bars and page tabs,
you'll eventually be able to get a copy of the page that doesn't have
sync problem in your page list and delete the offending one. I am sorry
I can't give you better instructions. The UI for resolving sync errors
is really not very user friendly in B2. I have already complained about
it.

The latter directory obviously is a left over from ON 2003 holding the
old ON 2003 files.
ON 2007 by defaults uses "One Note Notebooks".
For the rest of the paths for ON files pls see the "Options" dialog.

I had exactly the same problem this afternoon (prior to Jonathan's
posting)
I tried out practically all of what I now read in your suggestions -
to no avail.

So I created new pages in a different section and transferred the
content of the 4 broken pages over there with Copy+Paste.
As I could not even delete the broken pages, I finally deleted the
whole section.

Good deed!!

P.S. This happened on my desktop PC where the files are sitting
locally (not on remote device)

I went back to my bug report about this and took a look. After you tried
to resolve the issue, go to a different section in ON and let it sit for
a few mins. Then go back. There appears to be an issue where ON resolves
the problem, but the UI isn't updated...
Good deed!!
My bug report says that this has been fixed in later internal builds. So
we'll see how this will work in the next beta.

As I have said in other posts, ON always uses the cache and its syncing
mechanism, even if you are working strictly locally. Hence sync errors
can even happen then. You might be glad to hear that the sync error
detection mechanism is extremely aggressive in B2. MS is able to collect
data on what produced these errors and address the source(s). I would
expect that we'll see a lot less sync errors in a future beta.

OK, fine.
I would not have mentioned it, wasn't it for this thread.

Yes, I know. I had just mentioned it to make clear that it was not the
more complex situation of a network connection.

Sounds really great!
I believe that they have put quite a lot of thinking and manpower in
this most sophisticated system which is really fascinating me.

Thanks again

Thanks, Patrick and Rainald--
Further activity in the section (work has been so busy I haven't even had
time to get on to read your replies until this AM) produced a "This section
is corrupt" message when I was trying to name a new untitled page.

Then, I believe, the ON crashed after I clicked on the tool, "OneNote will
try to repair the corrupt section." So I will take the kind of steps Rainald
performed: just copy the content across to a new section during a boring
faculty meeting at school this AM.

What a good productivity tool these computers can be! <big grin> (What is
"grin" in German?)
