Crash on Excel Launch

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Excel crashes up startup and provides the detailed report below. I rebuilt the database as required. After several tries, it still didn't launch. Then re-installed Office from CD. No MS Office products would then work. Downloaded the SP1 but it wouldn't install 'due to missing software' Then used the Remove Office utility to strip everything off and did another fresh re-build. SP1 did install at that point. Entourage, PowerPoint and Word all open but Excel continues to crash. Put system to sleep and went into work. Upon wake, Excel worked without any problems. Great problem magically solved. Put back to sleep, took home, and turn on. Excel continues to crash as it did before. On launch, generates the below error report. HELP?

You haven't gone far enough with your updates - SP1 is only 12.1.0 but
Office is now at 12.1.5 so get that in place (you don't need the interims as
12.1.5 includes them). Then repair disk permissions & restart before
attempting to launch any of the apps.

I'm having the exact same problem as the original poster. I have updated up
to 12.1.5 and repaired the disk permissions... this has not worked. Of all of
the Office apps, only Excel fails to launch.

Installed 12.1.5 and disk permission repair as suggested. Same problem: works at work and crashes at home

Try moving all your program preferences in the users/youruser/Library/Preferences to a newly created temp folder (eg on the desktop) and start excel again. this worked for me. then you can start moving stuff back again and see which program's preferences caused the issue.

Found the source of the problem a few weeks ago. I use a dual monitor and Excel's new floating tool bar that can't be docked (what a wonderful feature, not ) was on the second monitor. Excel crashes if it is left on the 2nd monitor when the program is exited. If I leave it on the laptop monitor it opens just fine. So it turned out to be not a computer location issue but Excel not recognize the difference between one and two monitors at start up and crashing due to the floating formula toolbar.
